The procurement contract is signed, the equipment is manufactured, and installation and commissioning are complete. Does this mean the coating line is ready for smooth production? Experience tells us that there is a critical phase between "equipment that can run" and "stable output of qualified products." Many problems exposed in this phase do not originate from equipment quality, but from oversights in some fundamental preparation work before production.
After delivering over 2,000 coating production lines, we have identified ten preparation items that are most easily overlooked yet critically important for pre-production readiness. Part One: Process and Documentation Preparation
1. Have All Product Process Parameters Been Fully Verified?
Before production starts, it must be confirmed that all current process parameters (including pre-treatment bath concentration, spray booth temperature/humidity, temperature profiles for each oven section, conveyor chain speed, spraying voltage and flow rate, etc.) are validated based on actual workpieces under production-level conditions, not from laboratory or single-piece trial data. At a minimum, consecutive small-batch trial runs (recommended no fewer than 50 pieces) should be completed to confirm that all coating quality metrics are stably achieved.
2. Have Work Instructions Been Assigned to Specific Workstations?
A "Work Instruction" document stored in a filing cabinet is of little use to production. The key is to verify that each critical workstation (such as pre-treatment loading, spray booth operator, curing oven monitor, and quality inspection) has its own dedicated, concise, and visual "Standardized Operation Sheet." Have operators signed to confirm they understand and can execute the procedures?
3. Are Quality Inspection Standards and Sampling Plans Clearly Defined?
Have the judgment criteria and sampling frequencies for coating appearance (color difference, gloss, particles), film thickness, and adhesion (cross-cut/cross-hatch methods) been translated into specific, actionable inspection instructions? This is not only the basis for the quality department's work but should also serve as the reference for operators' self-inspections.
4. Have Emergency Response Plans for Common Faults Been Prepared?
For at least five high-frequency emergency scenarios—power outage, compressed air failure, oven over-temperature, spray gun blockage, and conveyor chain emergency stop—create clear and easy-to-read "Emergency Response Cards." Relevant personnel should also have participated in simulation drills.
Part Two: Material and Utility Confirmation
5. Have Coating and Chemical Compatibility Tests Been Conducted?
Before mass production, it is essential to verify that the current batches of paint, thinner, hardener, and pre-treatment chemicals are compatible with the equipment materials, spray system, and curing conditions. Compatibility tests are non-negotiable, especially when switching paint suppliers or formulations. Also, confirm that all materials required for the first production run (including spare parts) are already in the warehouse.
6. Does Compressed Air Quality Meet Spraying Requirements?
This is one of the most easily neglected links. Using verified testing instruments, confirm that the compressed air supplied to the spray booth meets the following criteria: oil content ≤0.1mg/m³, pressure dew point ≤-20°C, and solid particles ≤0.1μm (or conforming to ISO 8573-1 Class 1.2.1). A systematic compressed air quality test should be conducted before production starts.
7. Are Factory Utility Conditions Adequate for Full-Load Operation?
Confirm that during full-load production, the available electrical capacity, natural gas flow and pressure, water supply capacity, and total compressed air flow on-site are sufficient. Avoid production interruptions caused by utilities that are "underpowered" for the demand.

Part Three: Personnel and Environment Preparation
8. Have Key Personnel Passed Their On-the-Job Assessments?
Focus on assessment results, not just training hours. Confirm that key personnel—such as spray booth operators, pre-treatment laboratory technicians, maintenance electricians, and quality inspectors—have passed a qualification examination covering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and hold valid certificates of competence.
9. Have Spray Booth and Workshop Cleanliness Standards Been Achieved?
Particulates are a common source of coating defects. Before production, thoroughly clean the spray booth and surrounding areas. Use professional instruments to measure airborne particle concentration in the workshop, confirming it meets the required cleanliness level for the process. This is the most direct method to reduce particle coating defects.
10. Are Safety Devices and Emergency Supplies in Place?
Confirm that all safety devices (emergency stops, safety light curtains, combustible gas alarms, explosion-proof electrical equipment) have been tested and function correctly. Also, confirm that necessary emergency supplies (such as fire extinguishers, spill-absorbent materials, and personal protective equipment) are properly stocked in designated locations.

Each item on this checklist is not particularly complex or involves profound technical challenges. Their commonality lies in the fact that they all require dedicated time and effort to implement before production starts.
